Mary Anne Horning, 100, of Kent, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022 in the comfort of her home, with her family by her side. She was born in Canton, OH on June 26, 1922 to the late Michael and Frances (Novosel) Thomas. Mary Anne was the Valedictorian at Rootstown High School, class of 1941.
She was a Rosie the Riveter during WWII and enjoyed doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She made numerous afghans and made clothing for her grandchildren. Mary Anne enjoyed home projects and working in her yard. She was a very persistent and tenacious person who loved her family deeply. Mary Anne was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Bernard Andrew Horning, who passed away on January 21, 1996; and her siblings, Joey Thomas, Lillian Irwin, Wilma George, Goldie Rider and Michael Thomas.
Mary Anne leaves her daughter Joyce A. Horning of Kent; son Joseph T. (Rita) Horning of Stow; grandchildren, Elizabeth M. (Dave) Rothgery of Stow, Joseph T. Horning of Kent, Andrew B. Horning of Hilliard, OH; great grandchildren, PFC Dominic Risi, Kaden Rothgery, Colin and Dylan Rothgery; and her sister-in-law Margaret “Peg” Horning of Cuyahoga Falls.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Crossroads Hospice, for the wonderful care given to Mary Anne. They would also like to thank her caregivers and home health care aides who have helped tremendously over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 11:00AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 313 N. Depeyster St. Kent, OH 44240, with the Rev. Fr. Richard Pentello as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Standing Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to Mass from 10:00AM-11:00AM on Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Hospice Program or to the Brimfield Fire and Rescue Department.
