Mary Lou Steinert, 95, of Kent, died peacefully in the home where she was born, Wednesday, March 22, 2017, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 17, 1921 to Joseph and Harriet (Serani) Rinaldi. She attended St. Patrick Elementary School and was a 1939 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School. Her first job was as a clerk in the lighting department at McCrory's Five and Dime, where she met the "light of her life," John Steinert Jr. They married June 26, 1943.
She was a stay-at-home mom, accomplished homemaker and highly skilled seamstress. She was active in PTA, Cub Scouts, Circle of Bernadette and Infant of Prague Guild, and was a member of the Kent Health Board and Portage County Board of Elections.
After the 1978 passing of her beloved husband she found work as a cashier at the KSU Bookstore and enjoyed interacting with the students. During this time she became a member of KSU's Blue and Gold Club and particularly enjoyed supporting the men's and women's basketball teams.
She was famous for her generous hospitality to friends, family and acquaintances at both her Kent home and the family cottage on Kelleys Island. She loved playing cards and maintained her winning ways to the finish. She was a life member of St. Patrick's Church, where weekly card parties were a high point in her life.
She is survived by her children, John (Charlene) Steinert of Kent; Veronica (Royal) Barnard of Rutland, VT; Joseph (Diane) Steinert of Kent; Mary Jo (T) Miller of Lorain; and Laura (Walter) Cheges of Kent; her granddaughters, Joelle (Michael) Liedtke of Kent; Erinne (Clifton) Longobardi of Alexandria, VA; Haley (Michael) Russo of Clayton, NC; Caitlin Steinert of Columbus; Addie Cheges of Columbus; and Dana Steinert of Harrisburg, PA; and her great-grandchildren, Cooper Liedtke and Anneliese Liedtke of Kent; C.J. Longobardi and Olivia Longobardi of Alexandria, VA; and Alexis Destafino, Wynn Russo and Rhett Russo of Clayton, NC, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband and by her brothers, Joseph "Bing" Rinaldi and Archie Rinaldi.
The family would like to thank Home Instead aides Ev, Tasheana, Shirley, Payton, McClintock, Abby and Sandy, the staff of Summa Hospice, and Kent EMTs.
