Mercedes Marie Zavala Hoefler
Mercedes Hoefler, 93, of Stow died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the Hospice
Care Center.
Born in Canton, Ohio, November 10, 1917 to Isadore and Dora (Smail) Zavala, she lived for many years in the Kent area before retiring to Land O' Lakes, Florida in 1981 with her husband. She returned to this area in 1999 and resided in Rockport Colony in Stow.
Cedy received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Dana Conservatory of Music now associated with Youngstown State University. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Kent where she participated in one of the women's circles, attended Primetimers meetings, and was a pianist for the youth choir. She was an Associate Director of Sweet Adelines, a member of Sorosis of Kent and also Stow Sunshiners where she served as their Music Chairman. She previously volunteered for Stow Glen Retirement Center where she played piano every Friday morning for their religious services.
Prior to retirement, Cedy did bookkeeping for The Print Shop, Commercial Press, and the Music Mart of Kent. She also worked as the administrative assistant to the Principal at Central Elementary School.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ervin (Red) Hoefler in 1993, she is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws Robert (Lynnda) of Stow and Randy (Debbie) from Plano, Texas and her cousin John (Charlotte) Jones of Girard.
Calling hours will be held 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday, February 18 at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home, 628 West Main Street. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, February 19 at the United Church of Christ in Kent with Rev. Heather C. Wicks officiating. Burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery.
