Merle Fredrick Andregg

November 30, 1919 — September 2, 2011

Merle F. Andregg, 91, a resident of Copeland Oaks in Sebring, passed away on September 2, 2011. He was born in Kent on November 30, 1919, and lived much of his life in the Kent community.

Merle was a World War II Navy Veteran and served as a Fleet instructor in anti-submarine warfare at Key West, Florida, supporting the European Theater of the War. When the War ended in Europe, he was transferred to the Pacific theater where he served as a troop officer on the S.S. Cape Douglas, a troop transport ship, with a final assignment in Okinawa. Following his military service, Merle returned to Kent and his job at the Post Office, where he was employed for 37 years. His final appointment with the Post Office was being Postmaster for Kent for 14 years, beginning in 1965.

He studied business at both the Armed Forces Institute and Oklahoma University, but Merle's first and real love was music. He studied music at Kent State University and at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and served as Director of Music at Kent United Methodist Church for 29 years. After he retired from that position in 1981, he was awarded the title of "Director of Music Emeritus." He was also active in many other musical activities, including playing clarinet in the Kent American Legion Band and the Kent Civic Symphony Orchestra. He also performed in the Early Music Consort of Northern Ohio for 15 years. In addition to his professional and musical interests, Merle served as president of the Kent Rotary Club and president of the Kent Men's Garden Club.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, of Sebring; daughter, Katharine of Acworth, GA; daughter-in-law, Carol Andregg of Medina; and granddaughters, Katie of Chicago; Emily and Amy of Medina. Other survivors include his stepsons, Bruce Vasbinder of Kent and Dr. Robert Foulkes of North Lima; stepdaughters, Claudia Taylor of Utica, NY and Dr. Laurdella Foulkes-Levy of Oxford, MS; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Maryanna, his wife of 51 years; second wife, Laurdella Foulkes Andregg; brother, Charles Andregg; and sons, Eric and Mark.
A memorial service for Merle will be held in Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks in Sebring on (date). The body was cremated and will be buried beside Maryanna at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

The celebration of life service will be at Bennett Chapel in the Copeland Oaks Retirement Community at 800 South 15th St. Sebring, on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00PM. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Feeding America, 35 E.
