Michael Robert Hernan

December 1, 1940 — July 24, 2015

Michael Robert "Mike" Hernan, 74, of Deerfield, died Friday, July 24, 2015 at his home.

He was born December 1, 1940 in Youngstown to Frank E. and Gertrude G. (Heath) Hernan. He attended Central Catholic High School in Massillon. He earned his BA in Education and Psychology from LaSalle College in Philadelphia and completed post graduate work in Management at Columbia University in New York. He retired as Manager of Product Support at Diebold in North Canton. Before joining Diebold in 1972, he had been the Director of Education of the American Automotive Institute in Canton, Supervisor of Service Publications with Hercules Engines, Inc. in Canton, and an instructor at St. Francis Vocational School in Philadelphia.

Mike had a lifelong love and interest in mechanics. His hobby was rebuilding Mercedes and later he began rebuilding mopeds. He was a tinkerer at heart and always had a desk or tabletop scattered with parts of a clock or something he was repairing. He was especially gifted as a teacher and mentor to young men. He always had a kid working by his side in his shop. He enjoyed watching them learn and take the next step.

After leaving Diebold, he moved to what turned to be his own private paradise on Berlin Reservoir. He renewed friendships with his Diebold coworkers and quickly made new friends. He was variously described as "Big Bear", Uncle and Friend.

He is survived by sisters, Frances Hernan of Canton, MaryLou Baltrinic of Springfield Township, and Lori (Alan) Coogan of Kent; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held by family and friends at a later date.
