Michiko Hakutani

Michiko Hakutani, 67, died at Akron City Hospital on February 16,2010, of complications from cancer. She is survived by her husband, Yoshinobu Hakutani, Professor of English at Kent State University; her son, Yoshiki Hakutani of Chester Springs, P A, his wife, Jacqueline Miller, their daughter Emiko Hakutani; her son, Naoki Hakutani of Little Rock, AR, and his wife, Jaeyeon Park. Michiko Hakutani was born in Japan in 1942. She received her B.A. in English Literature from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo. Married to Yoshinobu Hakutani, Michiko came to Los Angeles, CA in 1967. They moved to Kent, Ohio, in 1968. She received her MFA from Kent State University in 1990 and exhibited her work in the United States. She also co-translated Richard Wright's Haiku: This Other World into Japanese in 2007. She was an instructor of Japanese at Kent State University from 1975 to 2009. A celebration of her life will be held at the Kent State University Student Center, Room 204, on Saturday, February 27th, from 5-7 p.m.
