Mildred (Millie) L. DuBois went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 21, 2011. She was born on September 22, 1920 in Kent, Ohio and resided there most of her life until moving to Stow ten years ago. She was the second child of Leroy E. and Annis C. (Johnson) Nighman.
Millie was an accomplished violinist. She played trombone in the Roosevelt High School band and also served as concert master of the orchestra. After high school, Millie attended Bohecker's Business College and joined the traveling band, Mildred Manning and the Rhythmettes.
Millie married Jerry L. Poulton in March 1940 and had two daughters, Jacquelyn and Pamela. Millie was a secretary for over thirty years, working the majority of that time at City Loan and Savings and Alside Inc. before retiring in 1968 when she married her second husband, Pierre M. DuBois. Millie continued to work part-time at Lu Lyman Chevrolet and at DuBois Bookstore.
Millie's interests included bowling, gardening, camping, archery, sewing, crocheting, and crafting. She and Pierre worked as travel guides for Bixler Tours and enjoyed traveling with friends to Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa. Millie loved spending time with her family and canine companions, especially her shih-tzu, Scotty.
Millie was active in many organizations including Portage County Oak Branch Garden Club, Women's Club and Women's Club Past Presidents, Pinochle Club, Bridge Club, Tree City Campers, Red Hot Steppers of Kent, and as a Board of Election Poll Judge. She was a member of Kent United Church of Christ, Prime Timers and Women's Fellowship. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and together, she and Pierre, delivered Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. She was a regular blood donor and participated in many community service projects.
Preceding her in death were her parents Roy and Annis Nighman of Kent and her sister Helen Shook of Englewood, Ohio. She is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, Pierre M. DuBois, daughters Jacquelyn (Steve) Hughes of Stow and Pamela Ward of Garland, Texas, step-son John H. DuBois of Kent and sister Polly Slama of N. Richland Hills, Texas. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Steven (Susan) Mileski of Kent, Tiffany (Darrell) Lewis of Stow, Tyler (Katie) Straub of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Christopher (Darlene) Straub of Frisco, Texas. Millie also leaves behind six adored great-grandchildren and numerous wonderful friends.
Services will be conducted by Pastor Heather Wicks of the United Church of Christ at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, 10:30 AM Friday, December 30th. Calling hours will be held 9:30 - 10:30 AM, followed by the burial at Standing Rock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Millie's name to Golden Treasures Rescue in Bath, Ohio or to your favorite pet rescue foundation. Special thanks to Akron City Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Altercare of Brimfield, and Harbor Light Hospice Center of Kent for their exceptional care of Millie during her last days.
