Patricia Ann Mazzer

Patricia Ann Mazzer (née Barkovitz) of Ravenna passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at home, surrounded by family and friends.

Patricia was born January 22, 1942 and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Lincoln Park high school where she joined the Future Teachers Association and graduated early, attending Western Michigan University at the age of 16. She went on to earn her Master's degree at Kent State University while raising her first child, Paula.

Patricia had a passion for education that was inspired by the book The Thread That Runs So True, by Jesse Stuart. She taught 7th grade life science at Brown Middle School in Ravenna for 30 years before retiring and taking a position in the AT&T Technology classroom at Kent State in 1998. She was honored with a Coleman Foundation Lifetime Achievement award in 2007. She engaged and inspired hundreds of students over the years with fun and interactive science activities and lessons.

She loved nature and the outdoors, was an avid mystery reader and music lover, and cherished Hungarian and Slovak traditions, especially the food. She enjoyed playing Canasta, dinners with friends, and family vacations to northern Michigan. She maintained lifelong relationships with many former colleagues and students, taking great pleasure in reconnecting at monthly retired-teacher luncheons and other events.

Patricia is survived by her daughters, Dr. Paula Mazzer, Mary Mazzer, and Jessica Mazzer Julian; her son-in-law, CJ Julian; and her siblings, William and Karen Barkovitz, Carol and George Englemann, and Susan and Chuck Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Samuel J. Mazzer, her parents, William and Mary Barkovitz, and brother Michael Barkovitz. Patricia was able to live out her days in the comfort of her own home thanks to the dedicated and skilled work of her primary caregiver, Trae.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 1st from 1:00pm - 3:00pm at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main St. Kent, OH 44240. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm.
