Paul Vito Amodio, 86, of Kent, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at UH Portage Medical Center in Ravenna.
He was born July 20, 1930 in Kent to Leonard and Mary (Pirolozzi) Amodio. He was a member of the US Navy and served as a Diplomatic Courier.
A 1948 Roosevelt graduate, he was an outstanding athlete and captain of the football team at Theodore Roosevelt High School, where he was named Most Valuable Player. At Kent State University, he played both offense and defense on the football team and again was named captain. He coached at Clearview High School where he was the winningest coach in their history. While working on his master's degree in Athletic Administration, he served on the football staff at KSU. He also coached football at The University of Akron and Yale University, where he also served as golf coach. He was athletic director at Youngstown State University for five years and directed the building of a new football stadium while improving both men's and women's sports programs. In 1980, he was named athletic director at KSU, where he helped integrate Title IX. During his tenure, a number of men's and women's teams won championships. Well known for hiring talented coaches, he also was very involved in the development and construction of an indoor �eld house. In his retirement, he served on the Ohio Boxing Commission for seven years.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann (Lukenic); sons, Leonard (Nancy) Amodio of Atlantic Beach, FL and Capt. Paul (Dr. Tiffany) Amodio of Norfolk, VA; son-in-law, Trey Mann of Ravenna; grandchildren, Paul Vito Amodio, Anthony Amodio, Morgan Mann, Mason Mann, Sadie Amodio, and Charlotte Amodio; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, MariaGiavanna Mann; son, Lawrence Amodio; and sisters, Ann L. Diltz and Florence Sawyer.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 22nd at St. Patrick Church with Father Richard Pentello officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the services.
