Paul James Wallace, 83, formerly of Kent and now of Stow, died Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio.
Paul was born March 24, 1928 in Pontiac, Michigan to Minto Warren and Mary Margaret (Griffiths) Wallace. Paul graduated from Pontiac High School in 1946, the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Music in 1950 and a Master of Music in 1954. In 1951, Paul served in the US Army Post Band in Colorado Springs, and transferred in 1952 to the US Army Band in Washington, DC. Paul was on the music faculty at the University of Kansas from 1955-1957 and then at the University of Wisconsin at Steven's Point from 1957-1963. Paul joined the music faculty at Kent State University in 1963 as an Assistant Professor teaching trombone and euphonium. He was named Associate Director of the School of Music in 1971 and became a Full Professor in 1973. He was also the Associate Director of Blossom Festival School from 1981-1985. Paul was granted Emeritus Professor upon his retirement in 1985.
Paul was a former editor, president and life time member of NACWPI (National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors.) After his retirement from the University, Paul worked as an editor and Vice President for Ludwig Music Publishing Company from 1985-1998. He served on the Kent Orchestra Society Board as a member and treasurer. Paul joined Kent Rotary in 1981 where he served as the president, sang in the octet, was named a Paul Harris Fellow and was a faithful member for the remainder of his life. Paul also volunteered for the Salvation Army and authored "Music in Kent" for a Kent history with the Historical Society. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Gwyn (Springer), whom he married on June 20, 1952; daughters, Debra (Charlie Graham) Wallace of Dripping Springs, TX, and Twyla Wallace of Wilmington, VT; grandchildren, Myles, Bree, and Quinn Wallace; brother, Gerald (Carolyn) Wallace of Traverse City, MI; sister, Juanita Craft (Jim Hawisher) of White Lake, MI and sister-in-law, Shirley Wallace Scott (Charlie Scott) of Pittsford, NY. He was preceded in death by their daughter, Davona Lyn in 2007; his brothers Eugene and Ralph, and his parents, Mary Margaret (Griffiths) and Minto Warren Wallace.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, October 31st at Trinity Lutheran Church, 600 S. Water Street, Kent, with Pastor Elizabeth Hazelton and Pastor Douglas Fidler officiating. Visitation begins at 11 am, immediately preceding the service. Private burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery.
