Paul Reeves Weigand, 64, passed away in his sleep at home on Friday, November 11, 2016.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, Carol Fanning Weigand; daughter, Sarah (Carey) McDonald, grandson, Julian James McDonald; son, Michael (Annie McDonnell) Weigand; sister, Ann (Edward) Weigand LaTour; sister, Mary Jane (Jeff) Weigand Tanaka; John (Jan) Weigand; sister-in-law, Kay (Chris McLaughlin) Fanning. He is also survived by nephews and nieces Philip and Maria LaTour, Steven Tanaka, Matthew and Molly Weigand, and Maya McLaughlin. Along with his human family, his loyal companion Lucy "Velcro" the vizsla will miss Paul tremendously.
Born in Columbus, the son of Glenn and Mary Jean Weigand, Paul grew up in Akron, OH, where he attended Buchtel High School. Throughout his childhood he was active in Christ United Methodist Church of Akron, as well as the Boy Scouts of America where he was an Eagle Scout. Paul attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, where he met Carol in a pottery class. The two shared a special relationship full of love and admiration throughout their marriage. Paul completed his PhD in counselor education at Kent State University.
Paul saw working as a psychologist as a calling to help people when they needed it the most. In 2003, Paul started his own private practice serving older adults and people living with disability in nursing homes across Northeast Ohio and with his brother John at Central Ohio Geriatrics. This work was his passion, with Paul always going above and beyond to improve his clients' quality of life.
Paul worked tirelessly to provide not only for the basic needs of his family, but also to offer guidance, wisdom, and fun whenever possible. He loved the holidays and was the household sentimentalist. He was an active Dad, stepping up to cheer on his children at countless dance recitals, Hot Stove baseball games, and drama productions. He enjoyed the new role of GrandPaul and relished his relationship with his growing family.
Paul was a man of many hobbies and interests including fishing, photography, Cleveland Indians baseball, cooking for loved ones, Ohio State football, bird watching, live music (especially at the Kent Stage), and woodworking.
Please join in the celebration of Paul's life. Calling hours will be held from 10:00AM - 12:00PM Saturday, November 19th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home Crematory in Kent, with a memorial service at 12:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Kent Stage, the Portage Park District, or Allegheny College.
