Raven Luna-BlackRaven was born on August 10, 1952, in Bexar County, Texas, to Isabel Morales Luna and Eulalio Vela Robles.
At 19, Raven enlisted in the Navy, serving as a Culinary Specialist aboard ship, where she cultivated a love for service. In 1982, she graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, beginning a career dedicated to helping others. Over the years, she served various communities in Texas, Missouri, and Ohio.
Raven’s life was a tapestry of strength and complexity. She approached life with determination and a bold spirit, but her journey was not without its challenges. While her life was often marked by struggle, her presence left an indelible mark on those who knew her, for better or for worse.
She is survived by her partner, Alyssa Lamb; her daughters, Kathy Martinez and Crystal BlackRaven (Jeffrey) of Abilene, Texas; C. Jade Nicholas (Karsten) of Dalton, Massachusetts; and Gwendolyn Leggott of Joplin, Missouri. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kate Holladay, Ian Holladay, Elena BlackRaven, Samuel BlackRaven, Ella Holladay, Kohl Holladay, Dwight Eldred and Jade Eldred. She shared a deep and enduring friendship with Heather Eldred of Joplin, Missouri, whose presence brought comfort and joy.
Raven’s legacy is a reminder that life is a journey of growth and learning, and her story is one of perseverance through life’s complexities. Those who knew her well remember her as a woman of intellect, humor, and resolve.
A private memorial service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to The Trevor Project.
