Raymond Edward Swaney, 78, of Kent, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at his home.
He was born June 5, 1936 in Kent, OH to Harry E. and Julia Helen (Slama) Swaney. Raymond was an upholsterer at Kent Upholstery and then became self-employed. He served as a Marine during the Korean War. Ray was a member of the Kent American Legion Post# 496, including serving as a Post Commander. Ray formed and was the leader of the American Legion's Honor Guard. He also volunteered (Deputy Representative from Post 496) at the Brecksville VA Hospital and the Ravenna VA Clinic for many years. He also helped form the Sons of the American Legion at Kent Post 496.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie (Digman), whom he married on June 15, 1972; sons, Joe (Janet) Swaney of Kent, Michael (Diane) Swaney of Mogadore, and Jerry Baughman of Kent; daughters, Paula (Jay) Miller of Colorado Springs, CO, Denise Baughman of Kent, Cyndi (Bill) Underwood of Hartville, Nan (Jeff Caudill) Errera of Kent, Genevieve "Kelly" (Steve Hyre) Trusso of Kent, and Stevie (J.T. Dunn) Chapman of Rootstown; twenty-four grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Fran) Swaney of Ravenna; and sister, Judy (Tom) Crocker of Kent. He was preceded in death by his sons, Raymond E. Swaney II, Tracy Swaney, and Michael Baughman; son-in-law, Pat Errera; brother, Harry "Junie" Swaney; sisters, Edith Montgomery and Maryann Howe.
Calling hours will be held 5-8 PM Monday, July 21st at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home And Crematory in Kent where funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 22nd with Rev. William C. Andrick officiating. Committal service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 22nd at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any veterans organization, hospice, or nursing home of your choice.
