Reed B. Strimple, 90, died Saturday, April 16, 2011 at his home.
He was born November 12, 1920 in Kent to Ross B. and Helen L. (Reed) Strimple. He was a Theodore Roosevelt High School graduate, Class of 1938, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity while at Miami University graduating in 1942. After a short stint at Proctor & Gamble, he enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He had attended Harvard Business School for Officer's Training and then served as Paymaster of the USS Duluth in Admiral Halsey's Pacific Fleet attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to Kent in 1946 to enter business with his father at R.B. Strimple & Son Insurance and Real Estate. He retired at age 90 as consultant with Strimple-Kallstrom-Bartell Insurance Agency, Inc. In 1970, he established the Strimple Christmas Tree Farm in Streetsboro providing years and years of Holiday Memories for area families.
He was a member of the Kent Rotary Club and Kent Historical Society. He was a former member of the United Church of Christ of Kent for 77 yrs; Twin Lakes Country Club; the City Bank Board of Directors, and Kent City School Board for 20 years (serving 7 years as President). He was the Past President of the following: Kent Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, Kent Area Chamber of Commerce, and Kent Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Velma M. (Thomas) Strimple, whom he married on October 5, 1968; children, Judith (Allen) Redwine of Houston, TX, Bonita (Jay) Graves of Seminole, FL, Dan (Jan) Strimple of Irving, TX, and Julie (Joe) Vickers of Twin Lakes; grandchildren, Scott (Monique) Comernisky of Jacksonville, FL, Derek (Amy) Starr Redwine of Akron, and Dana (Kevin) White of Hillsborough, North Carolina; nine great grandchildren; and sister, Helen Jane Wilson of Vancouver, WA.
Calling hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday, April 21st at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent where funeral services will be held 9:30 AM Friday, April 22nd with Jay Graves officiating.
