Richard T. Sunderland, 87, of Kent, died Wednesday, October 7, 2012.
He was born August 20, 1925 in St. Mary's, to John and Ada (Bubp) Sunderland. Dick received his B.S. in Education from Miami University in 1948 and his M.A. from Ohio State University in 1953. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a music teacher and marching band director for the Portsmouth City Schools. He then taught music and was a choir director for the Twinsburg City Schools for 36 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Twinsburg where he was their longtime organist and choir director.
He is survived by sons, David R. Sunderland of Ashland, MA and A.J. (Alicia) Sunderland of Kent; grandson, Owen Richard Sunderland; brother, William Sunderland of Bethlehem, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; parents, John and Ada; brothers, Ned and Jack; and sister, Virginia "Sunny" Owens.
Calling hours will be held 2-5 PM Saturday, October 13th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, OH. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 14 at First Congregational Church of Twinsburg. Private inurnment will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery.
