Richard L. Workman

Richard L. Workman, 94, of Mantua Township, died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at UH Portage Medical Center in Ravenna after complications from a fall at home.

He was born August 1, 1923 in Campbellsport, Ohio to Lawrence H. and May (Richards) Workman. He was a 1942 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and attended Kent State University. He was a veteran of the Navy with the rank of GM2C serving in World War II. Richard married Martha J. Pearson on December 29, 1946, and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2016. Richard was a Boy Scout Troop #257. Richard retired from the Kent City Fire Department as a Lieutenant. He also was appointed acting Chief, after the death of Chief Fred Miller, until a new chief was appointed. He was past President and Treasurer of the Portage City Firefighter Assoc. and was a Deputy Sheriff and a member of the first Portage County Rescue Dive Team. He was a member of the Kent Lions Club serving as King Lion in 1990. Richard was an endowed member of the Rockton Masonic Lodge # 316 where he just received his 70-year pin and the Kent Masonic Chapter #192. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Post 193 of Mantua. He belonged to a Monday and Tuesday morning breakfast group. He was also a carpenter and build many houses in Kent, Twin Lakes and all over Portage County. Richard was a member of the Kent United Church of Christ since 1946.

Richard was proud of having the oldest original savings account at Hometown Bank. He started his account when he was 11 years old and had his first paper route, delivering the Akron Beacon Journal. Richard knew so much Kent history and had a story to tell about almost anything or anybody you would ask him about.

He is survived by daughter, Judy Fiala of Hiram; son, John (Ronnie) Workman of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; six grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and sister, Irene Workman Symns French of Mt. Dora, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha J. Workman in 2016; son, Rick Workman; son-in-law, Joe Fiala; granddaughter, Diana Lynn Fiala; and sisters, Grace Haas and Ilene Rogers.

Calling hours will be held 9:00 -11:00 AM Friday, April 13 at Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main Street, Kent with funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday, April 13 with Rev. Amy Gopp Vigne officiating. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Mantua Shalersville Fire Fighter's Assoc. (MSFFA), 10303 State Route 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255 or the Kent Fire Fighters Assoc., 320 S. DePeyster Street, Kent, Ohio 44240. Burial will be held at a later date.
