Robert E. "Bob" Hensel, of Kent, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
He was born January 10, 1927 in Barnhill, OH to Thurlow and Sylvia (Leggett) Hensel. Robert received his undergraduate degree from Otterbein College where he was a member of Zeta Phi fraternity. He later earned his Masters of Sciences from Kent State University. Bob was a veteran of the US Army during WWII where he served with the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Kent Kiwanis Club.
Bob was a devoted husband of fifty-eight years and a loving father. His three grandchildren were the light of his life. He was an avid golfer, skilled woodworker, and historian. He enjoyed reading and playing bridge with his friends.
Bob was a born teacher who passed along his love of knowledge and golf not only to his students, but to all who knew him. He started his career as a teacher, school bus driver, and coach at Kings Mills High School. He then taught math and science at Kent Roosevelt. He spent the majority of his career at Chagrin Falls High School, where he taught physics and chemistry and coached the golf team. He was very proud of the kids he coached, especially when he led his team to the state finals in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Kay (Edwards) Hensel, whom he married on November 20,1954; sons, Robert (Cherie) Hensel of Mantua, Mark (Lisa Lawson) Hensel of Kent; daughter, Jan (Tod Hecht) Hensel of Columbus; grandchildren, Jodi (Aaron) Hensel Baxter of Washington DC, Sandi Hensel of Cleveland, Grant Hensel of Columbus; brother, Harold Hensel of New Philadelphia.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 23 at United Church Of Christ Of Kent 1400 E. Main Street, Kent, OH 44240. Calling hours will be held 12-2 PM Saturday, February 23 at United Church Of Christ Of Kent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Hospice team and staff of Robinson Memorial Hospital.
