Robert C. Martin

July 14, 1950 — April 9, 2019

Robert C. Martin, age 68, a long-time resident of Kent, passed away Tuesday April 9, 2019 at UH Portage Medical Center. He was born July 14, 1950 in Tiffin, Ohio and was the eldest son of Robert W. and Barbara J. Martin, also of Kent.
From a very early age, Robert was fascinated with anything mechanical or electrical and liked learning how things worked. By 6th grade, he earned "Best of Show" for his project on pneumatics for the Portage County Science Fair. He learned to use tools while working with his father in the family business R W Martin & Sons. During his teenage years, he loved working on hot rods and his hemi cars with his friends.
Bob graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1968 and attended Kent State University. He was considered a "do it all" member of the family business in its early years. He was an electrician, rigger, installer, repair tech, and salesman and anything else that was needed for the business. He liked to teach and was always patient sharing his skills with others. He would never give up when approaching a job, figuring out a solution, regardless of how difficult it was. He liked challenges!
Bob turned an elaborate childhood model train hobby into a career working with the real thing. Always interested in railroading, he eventually established his own business refurbishing steam and diesel/electric locomotives.
Robert is survived by his son Jonathan (Loren) Martin of Auburn, Ohio and brothers Christopher (Carol) Martin of Kent, Jeffrey (Ann) Martin of Saint Louis, MO, Shawn (Susan) Martin of Kent, and Kevin (Leslie) Martin of Kent as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his long-time dear friend Marie Angelo of Stow and her children Melissa (Ric) Lieb of Ellet, Matt Angelo of Stow, and Mark (Erin) Angelo of Cuyahoga Falls.
Bob was extraordinarily unique, sometimes stubborn and confounding, but he loved people, never had an unkind word to say, always had a smile on his face, and enjoyed talking to everyone. Bob will be sadly missed by all including his loyal, loving pet Yorkie, Bentley.
