Sandra Mae Rohrbach

Sandra Mae Rohrbach, 82, of Kent died Tuesday, April 11, at Stow-Glen Retirement Village, Stow, of pneumonia.

Sandra was born May 4, 1934, in Warren, Ohio, to George and Pearl (Isaacson) Rohrbach. She grew up in Champion Township and graduated from Champion High School in 1952. She attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. She received a B.A. from Kent State University in 1959 and an M.A. in English literature, also from Kent, in 1960. She did postgraduate work in English literature at Western Reserve University.

Sandra taught elementary school in Champion and, later, English literature at Kent State; she also worked at Elyria Public Library. She lived in Ravenna, Elyria, and Tiffin before moving to Kent in 1979. She became active in the community and in her church, Kent Presbyterian, where she sang in the choir for a number of years and attended weekly Bible studies. Of Finnish descent, she was a member of the Scandinavian American Club. Sandra was active in the Heartland Book Club and in Sojourners Circle, a Presbyterian women's group. In 2013, she was given an Honorary Life Membership by the Presbyterian Women. A talented musician who played both piano and organ and enjoyed singing, she also was an avid reader. She enjoyed outings to museums, shows, and restaurants.

She is survived by a sister, Penelope Rohrbach Stratton, of Swampscott, Massachusetts; eight nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and great-nephews; by her longtime companion, Helen I. Medley; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and by two sisters, Judith Rohrbach Mather and Georgianne Rohrbach Stein.

Visiting hours will be Friday, April 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main Street, Kent. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 15, at 9 a.m. at Kent Presbyterian Church, 1456 E. Summit St., Kent. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Champion Center Cemetery, State Routes 305 and 45.
