After retirement, he taught the Law Enforcement Program at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School for several years, followed by employment as an Oberlin College security officer.
Married to his high school sweetheart for 43 years, Shawn was a devoted father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, who he adored, and he enjoyed reading about history and watching sports. He was an adult altar server at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst.
Shawn was preceded in death by infant twin sons Peter and Andrew, and parents Jeanne and Arthur Hadaway. He is survived by his wife, Dianne (nee Zapotosky), children Joseph (Lindsey) and Ava Hadaway-Smith, grandchildren Natalie and Macie, brother Larry, sister Sharon Keesee (Larry), brother Thomas (Barbara), sister Patricia Gallion, and many nieces and nephews.
