Sylvia Strasshofer

January 1, 1957 — August 5, 2016

Sylvia Strasshofer, was born January 1, 1957 in Yugoslavia/present-day Croatia.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Katica (Kaufmann) Vrbac.

Sylvia leaves behind her husband Al, whom she married September 11, 1982; her children, Jennifer and David; brother, Tom; sister-in-law, Ruth; nephew, Rick and family; step-mother Zora, and many cousins.

Sylvia earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Cleveland State University, and a master's from Case Western Reserve. She accepted a position as a social worker for Goodwill, which was her favorite job, and went on to work for Geauga County as a supervisor of protective services for adults and children. From there, she worked for Portage County as a Child Support Administrator, and later as an instructor for National College. Despite her wide range of roles, Sylvia always considered herself a social worker.

In 2010, Sylvia was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. She was given 3 to 6 months to live, and later received a second opinion from the Cleveland Clinic. Despite the odds, Sylvia continued to live life to the fullest. She joined a support group at St. Joan of Arc Church, ran their 5k, five years in her diagnosis, and won 1st place in her age category. She also became a board member for the Residential Resources for the Developmentally Challenged.

Sylvia had a very strong sense of fairness, justice, and equality. She was very vocal about her beliefs, and worked hard to remove barriers for those in need. Sylvia was also an avid nature and animal lover.

Sylvia had fond memories of visiting Pope Francis in Philadelphia, and family beach vacations. She always considered the most important role of her life as a wife and mother, and she did an outstanding job.

Special thanks to Dr. Pelley of the Cleveland Clinic, all the caring oncology nurses, Father Ferraro, sister Eileen, Kim Mihok, Jack and Carol Carney, Carol Pritts, the St. Joan of Arc Women's Renewal Team, and VNS Hospice.
