Tatyana Yuryevna Bystrova-McIntyre, also known by some as Tanya McIntyre, aged 47, born April 25, 1977, in Tver, Russia, passed away in her home in Hudson, OH, over the weekend of February 1, 2025.
Tanya was a Professor in the Modern and Classical Languages Department at Kent State University teaching mainly classes in Russian but also many other classes not related to Russian. She was known for her ability to communicate successfully on a personal level with students at all levels of study and has received many letters and emails from students who credited her with making a life changing impact on their development and direction.
After graduating from Tver State University in Russia, with a degree in Linguistics, Tanya was named as the interpreter for a group of Russian university faculty members from four different Russian universities who were coming to Kent State University as part of a faculty exchange program. While in the U.S., Tanya applied for and was accepted into the first class of the new Masters Degree in Translation Program with an emphasis on Russian at Kent State University, which she proceeded to earn. She earned a second Masters with her Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language degree and went on to achieve her PhD in Translation Studies, all at Kent State University. When she accepted her PhD, she was the proud mother of 3 month-old Matthew.
She enjoyed traveling with her family and photographing her trips, and has visited all 50 US states and all Canadian provinces except for the northernmost territories, as well as Antarctica, Australia, Chile, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco and Russia.
Tanya was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Pastushenkova of Tver, Russia, and leaves behind her father, Yury Pastushenkov, also of Tver, Russia; her brother, Dmitrii Pastushenkov, of Dover, NH; her son, Matthew McIntyre, of Hudson, OH, and her former husband and Matthew’s father, George William “Bill” McIntyre of Kent, OH. Tanya has been single since 2016 but has maintained a good relationship with Matthew’s father as the two of them tried to do the best parenting job for Matthew that they could.
Matthew was the focus of Tanya’s life as they spent many weekends tent camping and fishing at Ohio State Parks, providing Tanya with the American equivalent of a Russian weekend escape to the family dacha and exposing Matthew to that tradition. She was very proud of the fact that he was better at catching fish than she was. Most nights when Matthew was with her, she enjoyed watching movies on Netflix with him.
