Thomas Edward Griggy, age 66, died of cancer on September 23, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born May 28, 1945 in Ravenna to Gilbert and Mona (Chalker) Griggy.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Portia (Himes) Griggy; his son, Chad Griggy of Lima, Ohio; and a daughter, Chelsea Griggy of San Francisco, CA. Survivors also include: brothers, Brian (Linda) Griggy of North Canton and Charles (Sheryl) Griggy of Bradenton, FI.; sisters, JoAnn (Ray) Knapp of Kent, Marilyn (Keith) Briner of Mogadore, Sally Trautman of Brimfield, Gene (Dave) Moore of Rootstown, Nancy (Jerry) Knapp of Malvern, Pati Callan of Fair Oaks, CA.; 31 nieces and nephews; 53 great nieces and nephews; and 3 great great nieces and nephews. Survived also by mother and father -in-Iaw, Robert and Marilyn Himes; and sister-in-Iaw, Pam Himes. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judy Lampasone.
Tom attended St Patrick School, Kent State University School, and Kent State University attaining his MEd. He taught for 30-years at Kent City Schools and was head wrestling coach for 9 years. He was also a home builder and carpenter. Tom had a full wrestling scholarship at KSU and was a captain and MAC Champion. During his 3-month battle with cancer, 8 of his KSU teammates made sure he was called or visited every day. Tom was compassionate toward others, a lover of nature, a man of extraordinary gifts and talents, and completely devoted to his family.
The family would like to thank his family, friends, neighbors, Fr. Agostino, and Crossroad Hospice for their loving outreach to him during his struggle.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, September 28th from 3-5pm and 7-9 pm at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where he will be cremated. Mass will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 29, 2011 in the University Parish Newman Center at Kent State followed by lunch.
