Lloyd Grund "Vic", 75, of Brimfield passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
He was born August 28, 1935 in Brimfield to Victor Lee Grund and Virginia Lee (Gatts) Grund Zaber.
As a child, he was an enthusiastic participant of the Soap Box Derby; as a teenager, he was the class photographer for Kent State High School and worked for Portage Detective Service as a private detective. At 19, he joined the Brimfield Fire Department and served for 38 years. During this time, he worked for Harry Miller Construction, became a dispatcher for State Highway Patrol at the Berea Post, and later was a part time sheriff's deputy for Portage County. While serving as deputy, he also worked for Lawson's Dairy in Cuyahoga Falls. After Lawson's, he became an employee for Chrysler and retired after 28 years. During his years at Chrysler, he continued to work with the Brimfield volunteer Fire Department where he served as assistant chief for ten years, chief for five years, an EMT instructor, and basic firefighter instructor. He and Fire Chief Jim Bastch of Ravenna worked to get FCC License for a Fire Alerting System for Portage County, making Brimfield township the first to have this service. He was instrumental in fire department fundraising efforts to get the first emergency squad vehicle for the community. Also during his years with Chrysler and the fire department, he was a school bus driver for Field Local Schools, presiding judge for Portage County Board of Elections, 4H leader, snowplow driver, Wide load escort driver for Kean Transporting, and, after retirement, he worked as an expediter for Tri State Expediting. After Tri State, he purchased a Kettle Korn business and enjoyed working at Six Flags and many fairs & festivals. He allowed members of Field Royal Gardsmen Marching Band to work with him donating over $12,000 to the band members over the years. He was affiliated with Portage County Sheriff's Association, Ohio Fire Chief's Association, Southwestern Portage Democratic Association, UAW local 122, and AFSCME. Lloyd loved his community and enjoyed giving back. He was always ready to help those in need. The family would like to extend special thanks to Brimfield Police Chief David Blough and Brimfield Fire Chief Robert Keller.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley M (Handy) Grund, whom he married on August 17, 1957 in Sebring; son, Mark (Tracy) Grund of Tallmadge; daughters, Carla Grund of Chandler, AZ, Darlene (Gene) Guillard of Tallmadge, and Valerie (Paul) Beyer of Westerville; grandchildren, Justin, Michael, Megan, Anna, Emma, and Max Grund, Erin (Dan) Matthews, Geoffrey (Jennifer) Moran, Greg and Doug Beyer; great grandchildren, Evelyn and Charlie Matthews; brothers, David (Shirley) Grund of Kent and Aaron (Lynne) Zaber of Vernon Hills, IL; sister, Shirley (John) Firse of Belleville, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Virginia Grund; step-father, Eugene Zaber; and his sister, Clara Morrison.
Calling hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday, September 2nd at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 West Main Street, Kent. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, September 3rd at Faith United Methodist Church, 1235 Tallmadge Rd., Brimfield with Rev. Curt Bissell officiating. Burial will be held at Restland Cemetery.
