Virginia M. Polanski

June 2, 1925 — March 14, 2018

People who looked at Virginia Polanski must have wondered why she always seemed to be smiling. Like the Irish eyes in the song, her positive outlook touched family and friends throughout her life. Although she died peacefully at the Gables of Kentridge Senior Living facility in Kent, Ohio on March 14, 2018 just a few days short of St. Patrick's Day, that smile will remain in the memories of all who knew her as a reflection of her love for her family and friends and life in general.

Virginia Marcella Cooper was born on June 2, 1925 to Marcella Whittle and John Cooper in Covington, Kentucky. She grew up in Cincinnati where she came to know and love the Catholic faith that was a mainstay throughout her life. Her participation in Mass and the sacraments remained a consistent testament to her upbringing and formed the basis for the deep spirituality that sustained her.

Virginia graduated from Our Lady of Cincinnati College (later known as Edgecliff College) and went on to study nursing in Hamilton, Ohio. In 1949 she married Stanley Polanski and relocated to Warren, Ohio where she began a long career in nursing. Before long, Ginny and Stan started a family and took up residence in McDonald where they spent many happy years. During that time she set aside her nurse's cap, taking it up again in the mid-1960's, with a focus on surgical nursing. The greater part of her service as an RN was at St. Joseph Hospital and she retired from Austintown Surgical Center in 1989. After her husband's passing she took up residence at the Villa Apartments in Pulaski, Pennsylvania where she was grateful to spend several years before relocating to the Gables of Kentridge in 2013.

Ginny was a great lover of music throughout her life, participating in choral groups like the Sweet Adelines and the chorus of the Youngstown Saxon Club. She also enjoyed the outdoors, often fishing and gardening with her husband or golfing with friends. She happily shared those passions with her children and their families: John (Margie Minghetti) of Mineral Ridge; Stan Jr. (Sheila Kennedy) of Raleigh, NC; Peggy of Cincinnati; Paul (Helen) of Satellite Beach, FL; Patty (Kristy Dillon) of Dayton, OH and Terri (Mike Bukovac) of Kent who shared in a great deal of her care over the past 5 years. Her memory also lives on in her grandchildren: Bill (Jenny) Watts, Ann (Ryan Sullivan) Watts, Miles (Chelsea Wadsworth) Polanski, Pete Polanski, Marcella Polanski, Will Wiencek, John Bukovac and Paul Bukovac.

Stanley J. Polanski, Virginia's husband of 57 years died in 2006. She is also predeceased by her only sibling Martha Jayne Dellerman and Delores Price, a dear cousin. Virginia's family is deeply grateful to the staff at Kentridge, Dr. Cynthia Flynn and Harbor Light Hospice for the compassion and tenderness they have shown over the past five years. Charities she supported include the Heifer Project and Oxfam. There will be no immediate arrangements and the family will celebrate Virginia's life at a later date.
