William I. Beliveau passed away on December 17, 2015 at Kent Healthcare Center following a battle with cancer. Bill was 76.
He was born August 29, 1939 in Northampton, Mass and lived his growing up years in the towns and cities of the general Boston area. He graduated from Easthampton H.S. in 1958. In 1962, Bill enlisted into the US Army and served four years, was a paratrooper, completing over 40 jumps. He had one tour of duty in Laos. During his Army service he received the Parachutist Badge and received his Honorable Discharge in May of 1965.
Following his Army service, Bill enrolled at Oregon State University on the GI Bill and received his B.S. degree from OSU in General Science. During his Army and Oregon State experiences, Bill realized how important it was to him to spend his life, "helping people and building community". With this focus Bill then became a Peace Corps Volunteer and upon his request to serve in Africa, was assigned to Malawi. Serving there for two years, Bill's involvement was community development. His responsibility was the building of schools and community centers, while working alongside the residents in the northern areas of the country. During Bill's time in Malawi, he was featured in a newspaper article in the Malawi Times for his pedal bike trip from Blantyre (southern Malawi) to Karonga (northern Malawi). Forsaking the conventional bus and distaining the characteristic hitch-hiking, he chose to brave the steep hills and mud by cycling more than 1,000 miles. After returning to the U.S., he worked in a number of positions as a salesman and courier in the Boston area before relocating to Ohio in 1995 to be near family.
Bill had an inquisitive mind, a real sense of humor, a love of the Cleveland Browns and a compassion for others. A kind and gentle man, he will be missed by family and friends.
Bill is survived by his brother, Robert (Faith) Beliveau of Litchfield; and his many friends in the Kent area and especially those at the Kent United Church of Christ where he was an active member.
Cremation has taken place. Burial will occur at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, with military honors. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 28, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at the Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 East Main St., Kent, OH, 44240. Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the church.
