Cathleen Poremba, 76, of Kent, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 with her family by her side. She was born in Cleveland on June 29, 1948 to the late Vernon and Genevieve Lewis and was a 1966 graduate of Garfield Heights High School.
When she was a junior at Garfield, Cathy met Tom Poremba, who was a senior at the time, and they began dating. She enjoyed playing sports and was voted most athletic female her senior year. She went on to Ohio Wesleyan University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, and married Tom, her senior year of college. Cathy taught school for a few years then decided it was time to start a family.
Instead of going back to teaching elementary school, Cathy decided to join her husband and became his partner in ministry. She was vital to Tom’s Methodist ministry and together they lead several churches, youth groups and missions. Cathy loved teaching children and leading young people to Christ. She joyfully taught Sunday School for many years.
Cathy was an accomplished pianist and organist. She accompanied church choirs on piano and organ at many churches over the years. Cathy was a collaborative pianist at Kent State University for 20 years, accompanying the students at their recitals. She taught private piano lessons in her home for 35 years.
She was a quiet, unimposing leader who loved people, especially children and teenagers. Her family meant the world to her, and she would help them in any way that she could. Cathy will be deeply missed and always remembered by those who knew and loved her.
She leaves her loving husband Rev. Tom Poremba; sons, Joshua (Cynthia) Poremba and Micah (Beth) Poremba; grandchildren, Anika, Tessa, Roman and Lake; brother Doug (Sue) Lewis and sister Margaret Lewis.
