Rev. Steven A. Protzman, 65, of Kent, passed away January 29, 2024. He was born August 18, 1958, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Charles (deceased) and Carol (Andersen) Protzman.
His passion in life was serving others, beginning with a two-year stint in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from New London High School in Iowa. After receiving a Master of Divinity degree from the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in 2009, Steven ministered to a flock at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City. In 2018, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent brought him to Ohio to minister to its congregation.
Before Steven’s calling to ministry, he earned a Bachelor of Architecture and designed pipe organs for several organ builders. Organs he designed are installed in churches and played in worship services across the country.
Steven loved to travel, whether it was a trip across Europe with his mother, drive through the American West, or a walk down the street from his house to Standing Rock. Steven also enjoyed music, art, history, and spending time outdoors. He was beloved by his family, friends, and congregants for his compassion, empathy and sense of humor.
Steven is survived by his mother, Carol Protzman, and seven siblings: Charles of Wisconsin, Chris of Washington, Dawn Werling of Texas, Kevin of Virginia, Brendan of Idaho, Eric of Iowa, and Marcia Grimes of Missouri. In addition, dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends mourn and celebrate him.
Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
